Foot Care Tips

The feet support our entire body weight for many hours daily. Belvedere Podiatry offers the following advice to keep your feet their healthiest. Please direct any questions you may have to our office.

1. Cleanliness and Care

• Wash and dry feet thoroughly on a daily basis.
• Cut toenails straight across- never round them off, and never dig into the corners.
• Lotions: use regularly to moisturize the skin of the feet, but do not apply between toes, as this can encourage the growth of fungus.
• Pedicures: always ask your nail salon or spa to explain their santizing procedures completely.

2. Shoes and Socks

• Shoes should be neither too tight nor too loose. They should fit comfortably with no rubbing or irritation.
• When shopping for shoes, do so later in the day when feet have settled and swelled to their maximum size.
• Do not wear shoes/sneakers without socks, as socks are designed to absorb perspiration, which can lead to an array of foot disorders.
• Women should avoid excessively restrictive nylon hoisery.
• Wear fresh, clean, well-fitted socks every day.

3. Outdoor Activities

• Try not to walk barefoot, even at the beach. Bare, unprotected feet are subject to serious injuries.
• Always use sunscreen on feet, especially when wearing open sandals.
• Have extra pairs of clean socks available when enjoying recreational activities such as hiking, nature walking, etc. Also, during these times, be sure to rest your feet regularly.

4. Orthoses

• Orthoses wearers should have their orthoses checked every 6 months.
• Orthoses should be replaced at least every 5 years.

5. Foot Pain

• Never ignore foot pain, as it may be a sign of a potentially serious problem or condition.
• Do not use over-the-counter remedies to treat corns and calluses. These conditions require professional attention.
